Defining Communication

Defining Communication – The Key to Success for Kids and Adults

Posted: April 24, 2018

Communication is “the link between the world and me.”  Communication is how we relate to ourselves and everything around us.  It is so important that the success of a society depends on how well it communicates.  The word communication comes from the word “common”, which means “equal.”  This means that in order to communicate with each other, we must find common ground.  To ensure this, our communication must be seen, heard and felt.

Communication can be verbal or nonverbal.  Visual communication has to do with the way we use body language to deliver our message.  Verbal communication refers to the way we sound: the tone of our voice, what words we make sound important, and how our voice changes when we speak.  Physical communication involves appropriately touching someone while we speak with them.

We can also communicate with ourselves.  It takes a great amount of practice to communicate with ourselves, teaching ourselves to grow into the successful people we want to be.

Yet another line of communication leads outward.  This is our link with everything outside of us. We can communicate with animals, plants and the environment in general.  However, most important to leaders is communication with other human beings.

Over the next few weeks, our All Star ATA Martial Arts blog will discuss how we look and act (or say things) can change people’s idea of us, and how that helps or hurts the way they see us.  We will also talk about how we listen to others and ourselves.  Finally, we will speak about the strongest form of communication: the actions we take.  The goal is to discuss ways for us to improve our leadership skills and to grow into the successful people we want to be.

Solid communication is very important to any person’s growth.  It doesn’t matter how much we know about anything or how many years we have been in school.  If we cannot communicate well, it is not likely that we will reach our goals in life.  The quality of our lives depends on our ability to interact with other human beings because we will need their help to reach almost every goal.
